Why these toys fit 12–18 month olds

Walking rewires play. A baby who can move wherever they want stops being an audience and becomes a participant — carrying toys from room to room, pushing anything that slides, and testing every surface for climbability. Toys at this stage should keep up: sturdy things to push, stack, sort, and scribble with.

This is also when play starts to have stories. Feeding a doll, tapping a toy phone, stirring an empty cup — these early pretend sequences look small but build language, memory, and social routines.

What your toddler is working on

  • Walking and carrying. Two-handed carrying while walking is a genuine skill — wagons and buckets make it a game.
  • Stacking and sorting. A few blocks high, one shape in the right hole — precision is improving week by week.
  • First pretend sequences. One action at a time — feed the doll, stir the cup — and repeated endlessly.

When running starts and pretend play becomes two-step sequences, it is time for toys for 18–24 month old toddlers. For the earlier stage, see toys for 9–12 month olds.
