What are crinkle toys?
Crinkle toys are soft toys — flat shapes, books, blankets with patches — that contain a layer of crinkly film. Squeezed or patted, they make a papery rustling sound. Most also add other textures: minky fabric, ribbons, tags, and appliquéd faces.
Why crinkle toys work for babies
The crinkle sound is immediate, gentle, and caused by the baby — the same cause-and-effect loop that makes rattles work, in a softer, fabric format. Because crinkle toys are light and floppy, even newborns can “play” with one by accident: a pat makes the sound, the sound invites another pat.
They are also quiet-adjacent — softer than a rattle — which makes them good for wind-down routines and on-the-go play.
How to choose a crinkle toy
- Sturdy seams. The crinkle film must stay sealed inside through chewing and washing.
- Washable fabric. These toys live close to faces — machine-washable is the practical standard.
- Simple, safe details. Ribbons and tags should be short and firmly stitched.
- Flat, light shapes. Easiest for small hands to hold and impossible to hurt anyone with.
Safety
- Inspect seams often — if the film can be reached, the toy is done.
- Keep crinkle toys out of the crib and sleep space, like all soft toys.
- Wash regularly — they collect drool faster than any other toy.
